CLUTCH KICK: TIMING & THROTTLE
10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can perform a clean clutch kick initiation at low speed - correct sequence, correct timing against weight transfer - and explain what the kick is actually doing to the driveline.
The Technique
- What the kick does. Clutch in momentarily lets revs flare, dumping it re-engages drive suddenly and shocks the rear tyres past their grip. It is a traction interrupt, not a launch. The violence comes from the rev difference, not from how hard you stomp.
- The sequence, slowed right down: steering loaded toward the corner, throttle partly open, clutch in fast and shallow, revs rise, clutch out fast, rears break, then immediately manage angle with throttle and let the steering follow.
- Timing against weight. The kick works best when the car is already turning and the rear is light - initiate as weight transfers off the rear axle on turn-in. Kicking in a straight line mostly just makes noise.

- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
