E-BRAKE ENTRY: ENTRY SPEED & TECHNIQUE
9 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can initiate with the handbrake at moderate entry speed - correct hand and foot sequence, clutch in during the pull - and choose when the e-brake is the right tool instead of a kick.
The Technique
- What the e-brake does. Locking the rear wheels kills rear grip instantly and lets the car rotate around the front axle. It is the most controllable initiation for beginners because the size of the rotation matches the length of the pull.
- The sequence: turn in, weight settles on the fronts, clutch in, pull the handbrake firmly for a defined moment, release, clutch out with throttle already opening, then manage angle. Clutch in during the pull protects the driveline and keeps the engine alive - non-negotiable on most setups; confirm exceptions with the pro.
- Pull length is rotation amount. Short pull, shallow entry. Long pull, big rotation. Teach it as a dial, not a switch, and calibrate on the skidpan.
