COMBO RUNS: LINKING TRICKS
10 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can link tricks into flowing sequences - managing water state, energy and setup time between hits - which is the skill that turns a trick list into a run.
The Technique
- The link is its own skill. Two landed tricks with a clean transition score and flow better than three tricks with dead water between them. Combo craft is what separates riders with tricks from riders with runs.
- Water state management. Every pass churns your launch faces. Plan sequences so each trick's exit sets up the next hit: carve lines that rebuild wake, directions that keep clean water in front of you, wind used rather than fought.
- Energy budgeting. Tricks cost differently - inverts are expensive, surface tricks are cheap. Sequence expensive-cheap-expensive so quality holds across the combo instead of fading through it.
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
