JUDGING CRITERIA - HOW SCORES WORK
7 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you understand how freestyle competition is actually scored - the categories judges mark, how weighting works, and how to read a scoresheet - so your training aims at points, not just applause.
The Technique
- The standard shape of judging. Freestyle events are typically scored across a timed run on criteria along the lines of difficulty, execution, variety and overall impression, with weightings varying by sanctioning body and event. We teach the shape here and have the reviewing pro confirm current specifics for the bodies our viewers will actually compete under.
- Difficulty is a menu, not a mystery. Judges reward harder tricks - inverts over surface work, combinations over singles - but only landed ones. A crashed double scores worse than a stomped single. Teach viewers to think in expected value.
- Execution is the multiplier. Amplitude, control, clean landings and visible confidence raise the score of every trick you already own. The cheapest points in the sport are execution points on existing tricks.
