CORKS & BARREL ROLLS: OFF-AXIS FOR COMPETITION
12 min · Full library · written lesson, video in production
After this lesson you understand off-axis rotation - the corked spins and barrel rolls that headline elite competition - what separates them from flat spins and flips, and the gymnastics-first path to training them.
The Technique
- Off-axis is the current language of elite slopestyle: the barrel roll (a sideways flip over the shoulder, axis like a rolling log) and the cork (a spin - usually a 360 or 720 - with the axis tipped so the rider dips below the bike mid-rotation and rises out of it). They score because they are genuinely harder: two rotational problems solved at once.
- The brutal honesty first: these are post-flip, post-spin tricks. The backflip must be casual, the 360 must be boring, and the trampoline work moves from a nice-to-have to the core training venue - because off-axis awareness cannot be discovered mid-air over dirt.
- How the axis gets tipped on the lip, and the count-and-spot drill behind comp-level corks
- 5 more technique steps
- The 2 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
