FLIPS: BACKFLIP, FRONTFLIP & FLIPPING DROPS
13 min · Full library · written lesson, video in production
After this lesson you understand how flips on a bike actually work - the take-off does the flipping, the tuck controls the speed, the spot controls the landing - and the strict ladder that takes them from foam pit to dirt.
The Technique
- The backflip stopped being a stunt and became a trick the day riders learned it is technique, not courage: on a properly steep lip, the flip is started by riding it - head and shoulders continuing back as the lip kicks you - and the bike simply comes along. Nobody muscles a bike around; the lip and the arc do the work.
- The gym comes first, always: trampoline backflips with coaching until they are casual (the conditioning library's progression), because the number one flip problem - opening early or late - is an air-awareness problem, and dirt is the worst classroom for it.
- Why the lip does the flipping, the tuck as a rotation throttle, and the full foam-to-dirt ladder
- 5 more technique steps
- The 2 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
