SIDEHILLING FUNDAMENTALS
12 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you can hold a traverse line across a slope with the track edge biting, adjust the line at will, and use the snowbike's narrow footprint on hills that stop sleds.
The Technique
- Sidehilling is where the snowbike earns its keep: a narrow single track that holds lines across slopes where a sled needs constant fighting. The physics are a held carve that never finishes: bike leant into the hill, edge cutting, throttle driving.
- Set the lean first: tip the bike uphill so the track edge bites into the slope, with your body staying vertical over the downhill side - the same counter-lean as carving, held indefinitely.
- Peg weighting on a sidehill splits opinion between schools - downhill peg to drive the edge in, versus uphill peg pressure with body position doing the work. We film the reviewing pros' consensus. Whichever the convention, the constant is: body vertical, bike leant, edge loaded.
- 3 more technique steps
- The 3 mistakes that undo it, with fixes
- The drill that builds the reflex
- The safety non-negotiables
