COLD ADAPTATION & BETWEEN-DAY RECOVERY
8 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
The point
Cold quietly taxes you all day, and what you do between days decides whether day four is a riding day.

The Technique
- Honest cold prep: a little graded exposure - cool showers, time outside in your actual riding layers on cold mornings - can take the shock out of alpine starts, but it is no substitute for a dialled clothing system. Layering is the real skill and it is trainable at home: practise adding and shedding layers around your training sessions.
- The recovery hierarchy on trip: sleep first, food second, everything else a distant third. Eight hours in a dark, cool room beats any gadget you can pack.
- Refuel properly after big days - carbohydrate to restock, protein spread through the evening, real food over race nutrition. The bar tab is not dinner.
Still under the glass
