FOAM PITS & AIRBAGS: SENDING IT WITHOUT THE BILL
8 min · Full library · written from fifteen years in the terrain
After this lesson you know how to use foam pits and airbag facilities to progress jumps, drops and freestyle - on bikes, boards or skis - so the consequence arrives only after the skill does.
The Technique
- The progression ladder that every serious freestyle athlete uses: trampoline, foam pit, airbag, resi or soft landing, then dirt or snow. Each rung proves the trick before the next rung raises the stakes. Skipping rungs is how seasons end.
- The house position on this is not theoretical. Dan learned new tricks on dirt because that was the only option at the time, and he carries injuries from it that have not gone away. He moved to learning into a hay pit, which worked surprisingly well for what it was. Both the technology and the standard of mountain bike progression have moved so far since then that neither is defensible now. He would not learn a new trick today into anything other than a foam pit. If you are reading this and weighing up whether the drive to a facility is worth it, that is the entire answer: the people who learned the hard way do not recommend the hard way.
- Foam pits are for learning the movement: the first attempts at any rotation or new shape, where landing does not matter at all. Expect to be terrible; that is what the foam is for.
- How one airbag day safely holds a season of dirt attempts, and the ladder rung that ends seasons when skipped
